Breakups are hard! No matter how or why the relationship has ended or what “side” you’re on, they all can come with heartbreak, a new routine to get used to, and old habits to break, along with a long list of emotions to sort through. Moving on after a breakup has its own set of challenges and even hard questions, such as “how long should I take to grieve?” Or, “when and how should I just move on?” And, “when and how do I begin dating again?”
Unfortunately, there aren’t simple answers to many of these questions. Every case is different, and every person has their own way of healing! However, we do have some tips and guidance from our matchmakers that can be applied to most relationships, individuals, and scenarios, that can help you in your process of healing your heart.
How do I know when it's time to move on?
If this is a question that has popped into your thoughts recently, then it’s time to take a look at your relationship. Ask yourself, “is this relationship serving me in a positive way?” Meaning, if you and your partner are no longer on the same page, your values and goals are conflicting, and you don't feel as strong a connection with you partner as you may have in the past or you may feel like you have with another person, then it might be time to move on. Asking yourself these questions and evaluating both the small and big picture of your relationship isn’t easy. But if you’re having any thoughts of doubt, it is incredibly necessary to step back and do a little soul searching. You may be surprised to find the answers, but that is perfectly okay!
How do I move forward from a past relationship?
The best advice we have for moving forward from a relationship to so limit contact, or better yet, stop it all together in order to let it go! Do this with a support system, whether that be through your friends, family, or a personal matchmaker to help you move on as quickly as you can. Give yourself this time to focus on yourself and your own emotional health. Taking a break to heal, grieve, and take time to be yourself takes priority at the beginning stages of moving forward. We can’t stress how important it is to do so in order for you to be able give your next relationship, or even your next date, a true and authentic chance to succeed. Make sure to keep an open mind and don't close your heart as you move past this relationship. Enjoy your time being single with the opportunity to regain full control of your life, the way you have always imagined and wanted.
How do I begin a new journey of dating?
Dating after a serious relationship has ended can be the most daunting and stressful thing in the world! Or, so it may seem. It’s important to start this journey with small steps and to only push yourself as much as you feel comfortable. The worst thing you can do after a relationship is to hide or stray away from new opportunities and relationships. This can be harmful as your heart will slowly close its doors not just on new love and romantic relationships, but on your friendships and perhaps family relationships as well. Once you feel comfortable to get back out there, try not to limit yourself to coffee or dinner dates, but make sure to plan dates around shared hobbies and interests. This way, you can view your new dates as fun activities with new people that might just become your new best friend, and not as a daunting first date with a potential romantic partner. Remind yourself that not everyone you meet will be the right match for you, but that doesn't mean you can't or shouldn't enjoy your experiences! It’s time to move on and enjoy the ride.
