With warmer weather in sight and summer just around the corner, your next date doesn’t have to be limited to an indoor activity! Give yourself a breath of fresh air, both literally and figuratively as you plan your next exciting day date in the great outdoors. Here are a dozen fun ideas we love for dates outside around Northeast PA.
1. Kayaking at Francis Slocum or on a local lake
Floating on a lake in a tandem kayak, or even in two singles is a great way to relax, feel the sun on your skin, or pick up the pace and get in a workout while you chat. If you feel comfortable enough, tandem kayaking is the perfect way to see how you “work” together and forces you to get to know one another. Unless you plan on going for a swim, there’s no way out of this date until you both agree it’s time to head home!
2. Hiking through Ricketts Glen or walking through your favorite state park
Outdoor lover or not, going on a hike or simply a walk in the park is another great way to spend time outside while getting to know each other. There’s something about being in nature and putting away the cell phones, that help us connect in a different way than an old-fashioned dinner date. More often than not, these hikes/walks prove to be quiet and really a perfect opportunity to listen to your date without distractions.
3. Biking around town or on your favorite path
If you’re in the market for a more heightened physical activity, bike riding is the way to go. There might even be more opportunity for adventure, twists and turns, and some surprises along the way as you can go a greater distance with wheels. Physical activities can ease awkward tension as you put your body to work and thoughts to rest, while still spending quality time together.
4. Dining al fresco at your favorite café or bar
You can always bring the tried and true date outside, as long as your restaurant of choice has the option for outdoor seating. You can never go wrong with a change of scenery and breath of fresh air! Grab some food, coffee, or drinks and enjoy the weather as well as your time together.
5. Festivals, summer concerts, and outdoor markets
During the warmer months, there always seems to be something going on in Northeast PA. From wine festivals, to art festivals, and outdoor markets, to craft fairs, or music festivals and concerts, you can start planning your dates around these outdoor community events. Not only will you spend time enjoying the day, but you will also get to know more about your date’s hobbies, interests, likes and dislikes by experiencing a little bit of local culture together.
6. Fishing or catching an outdoor yoga class
Two of the most relaxing outdoor activities in NEPA are also two great date ideas. Grab your fishing poles and head to a pond or lake with your date. Pick up lunch on the way or pack your own to enjoy by the water. Or, grab your yoga mat and find an outdoor yoga class along the riverfront in Wilkes-Barre or Pittston. Feeling adventurous? There’s even paddleboard yoga in NEPA so, you and your date can float on the water, too.
7. Zip lining, paintball, or target shooting at an outdoor range
Looking for something a little more out of the box to make a lasting impression? Or maybe something that requires you to cut a little loose and let your guard down? High energy activities like zip lining, paintball, or target shooting are all fun and exciting date ideas that are sure to be very memorable times with your date.
Sure, mini golfing is a tried and true date idea, but what if you both actually enjoy the sport or want to try new things together? Taking your date to a driving range or even to a full course for a round of golf, can help reveal even more common interests. And adding a little healthy competition in your relationship is never a bad thing either.
9. Horseback riding
Like biking or hiking, horseback riding can give you a chance to explore the great outdoors and the NEPA wilderness. But maybe unlike hiking or biking, being on horseback might take you out of your comfort zone and expose you to a whole new world alongside your date. Learn something new together or simply enjoy the ride.
10. Explore a new town like Jim Thorpe
Going on an adventure can be fun enough, but when your destination is a quaint little town, like Jim Thorpe, it can be a picture-perfect date idea. With so many shops, cafes, and themed activities to take advantage of, you can have a fun and peaceful date all while exploring something different.
11. Visit the zoo
Although animal lovers will especially enjoy this idea, spending the afternoon walking around the zoo together can spark a wide array of conversation topics. From sharing childhood memories, to creating inside jokes about the monkeys, or learning fun facts about the tigers, spending time together in a stimulating environment like a zoo, is a perfect way to keep the conversations alive.
12. Plan an outdoor BBQ or picnic, complete with kite flying or frisbee tossing
Pack your picnic baskets and get ready for an afternoon full of old-fashioned entertainment. Fire up the grill to show off your cooking skills and enjoy a BBQ together. Pass a frisbee, or volleyball back and forth to show off your athletic ability, all in good fun! And flying a kite together can bring you a little closer, dare we say giving you a precious, dream-like opportunity for a sweet kiss?
